Italy is one of my favorite countries in Europe, and after you’ll be visiting Italy for the first time, you’ll totally understand why!

Visiting Italy for the first time really feels like a pinch-me experience. It is an overwhelming country in the best way possible!

But if you want to make the most out of your trip to Italy, you should start your trip planning smartly and minimize the overwhelming feeling you might get.

From the length of your trip, how many cities you want to visit, what is your transportation way, when is the best time to visit – this Italy travel guide breaks it all down simply, clearly, and practice, plus gives you 3 ready-to-use itineraries for your first trip to Italy!

What I wish I knew before going to Italy?

After visiting Italy twice, here are 3 things I wish I knew before visiting Italy:

Plan for all kinds of weather – the weather in Italy is very inconsistent. The temperatures and weather are very different in every region, and the weather can be widely different in the morning than in the evening. So make sure to wear layers, and always be prepared with a good jacket.
In most restaurants service is included – Though some restaurants don’t include service, and then they write “SERVICE NOT INCLUDED” on the bill. So unless you see that on your bill, you should know that the service is included and there is no need to add extra.
Choose ATMs CAREFULLY – it’s important to find a ATM with low fees, because random ATMs can charge a very large fee for tourists.
In general, it’s best to look for bank ATMs, and not non-bank ATMs, like Euronet ATMs which are non-bank ones, and charge high withdrawal fees and poor currency conversion exchange rate. ALWAYS choose an ATM physically attached to a bank branch.

When Is The Best Time to Visit Italy?

Spring 🌸 (March–May): Best overall

In general, shoulder seasons (spring and fall) are perfect for visiting Italy and enjoying much less crowds, better affordable prices, and great weather (it’s not too hot and not too cold).

Specifically during the spring, you can enjoy the beautiful nature landscapes with blooming flowers and landscapes all over Italy.

Summer ☀ (June–August): Best for beach lovers!

If you are interested in a European summer vacation in Italy, and more interested in the beautiful beaches Italy has to offer in the south, summer is your go to season obviously.

The days are long, the weather is amazing, the beaches are perfect, but you should prepare yourself for LOTS of tourists and expensive prices.

Fall 🍁 (September–November): Best for food & wine

As said before, fall is one of the shoulder seasons that are most recommended to visit Italy. Weather is amazing, less tourists, cheaper prices!

But beyond that, fall is the harvest season in Tuscany, so I would definitely take that into consideration when planning your trip to Italy, if you are planning on visiting Tuscany.

Winter ❄ (December–February): Best for Christmas & Ski Resorts

Winter is not surprisingly the cheapest time to visit Italy, as their are much fewer tourists, and the weather is pretty cold.

There is the peak of December, for fun Christmas trips in Rome, Milan, etc. And these are also the best months to visit northern Italy for a dreamy ski resort vacation.

Italy offers some world-class ski destinations, mainly in the Dolomites and in the Italian Alps.

How Long to Spend in Italy?

The solid answer to this question depends on YOUR schedule and how available are you.

In general, if you are visiting Italy for the first time, and depending on where you are from, I recommend visiting Italy for a minimum of a week, but if you are traveling from a far (whether you are from North/South America or from Australia for example) I would recommend aiming for 10-14 days minimum.

Of course, if you are from Europe or anywhere closer to Europe, you can squeeze in a 5-7 days trip to Italy.

But, it is worth mentioning, that a common travel mistake people make when planning a trip to Italy, is trying to do WAY TOO MUCH.

Here’s a realistic destinations breakdown depending on the length of your trip:

5–7 days: 1–2 cities
10 days: 3 cities
14 days: 3–4 cities + a region (Tuscany, Amalfi Coast, Cinque Terre).
3 weeks+: Full north-to-south trip.

How To Get Around Italy?

1. High-Speed Trains

Italy’s high-speed trains system is AMAZING. Frecciarossa and Italo trains connect Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan, Naples. These trains are comfortable, fast, and surprisingly affordable!

6. Renting a Car (Only in certain regions)

Italy is also very comfortable for self-driving. Renting a car is pretty easy, and driving in Italy is easy as well.

Though you shouldn’t rent a car everywhere, just in wide areas like Tuscany, Dolomites, Sicily, and places like that. I would definitely avoid renting a car in large cities like Rome, Florence, Milan, or Venice of course.

7. Domestic Flights

For long distance destinations, and for faster travel, domestic flights are a great option to consider.

For example, if you want to get from Rome to Sicily, or if you want to easily get to Venice from Amalfi Coast, a domestic flight will be much shorter and easier than actually driving or using public transportation.

8. Ferries

Used around the Amalfi Coast, Cinque Terre, Sicily, and islands like Capri.

Where To Stay in Italy?

Italy offers so many accommodation options from hotels, Airbnbs, guest houses, and more.

In general, as exactly where to stay in each area, here are the best areas to stay at in popular destinations:

Rome:

Monti – this is one of the more popular areas to stay in Rome, as it is located in the city center of Rome.
It’s the best neighborhood for foodies, great nightlife, and lots of local charm. This neighborhood is close to all of the famous landmarks like the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and offers easy access to the metro.
Centro Storico (called the Historic Center) – the ultimate area for first-time visitors or anyone who wants the most central, cultural experience in Rome. It is perfect for first time visitors, everything is in a walking distance, but you should prepare yourself for the high prices. And it’s also a very touristy area.

Where to Stay in Rome?

I highly recommend checking out the XX Settembre hotel!

It’s a BEAUTIFUL hotel (I recommend booking the Superior Double or twin room).

It is located in the central area of Rome, and is only a 7-minute walk from the Rome Termini Metro Station. The hotel also offers a great buffet breakfast, free wifi, air conditioning (which isn’t obviouse in Italy!)

Florence:

San Lorenzo – this is the ultimate area for first-timers. It’s the city center, and right in the center of a busy touristy area.
This area is a walking distance from the Duomo and Central Market, it is a beautiful historical area that really gives you the full experience of a trip to Florence.

Santa Croce – this area is perfect for nightlife and great atmosphere. It’s the ultimate area for a younger tourists, looking for a lively, nightlife area with great bars and restaurants.

Where to Stay in Florence?

Duomo Suites Florence Hotel is a lovely hotel in Florence, very central located, and received an amazing score of 9.2-9.3 on Agoda and on Booking.

It is less than a mile away from the Uffizi Gallery, and other major attractions are a walking distance from the hotel.

The rooms are beautifully designed, and the Deluxe Rooms also have a beautiful balcony with a view.

Tuscany (Country Side):

Tuscany is a region, so the best places to stay at in Tuscany are typically small towns or cities that serves as a base for your trip in Tuscany.

Here are the best areas to stay at when exploring Tuscany:

Chianti Region – this is Tuscany’s famous wine region, famous for it’s beautiful rolling hills, vineyards, and classy Tuscan landscape. It’s the perfect area to explore vineyards, taste wine and cheeses.
The best way to feel the full experience of Tuscany is to stay at an Agriturismo (farm stay) or a local villa in one of the smaller towns like Radda or Castellina.

Val d’Orcia – this is one of the most iconic areas in Tuscany, known for iconic photography opportunities, and beautiful charming towns. To best explore this area, stay in Pienza, Montepulciano, or Montalcino for the best access to this beautiful valley.

Where to Stay in Tuscany?

Castello di Volpaia makes the perfect, traditional Tuscany stay experience.

It’s housed in a beautiful, historic building, offering a unique experience with a beautiful pool with a view.

It is centrally located in Tuscany, and makes a great base for your stay in Tuscany.

There’s an amazing Italian breakfast, as well as a traditional Italian restaurant in the villa.

Also, what I love about this villa is that they offer parking and an early check in option, which is a huge bonus!

Venice:

San Marco – for first timer’s San Marco is the best area to stay at. It’s the heart of Venice, a short walking distance from everywhere, and just a fun touristy area to stay at. Though it is the most expensive and busiest area, but it is super convenient to explore Venice in.

Dorsoduro – this is the best area for amazing Venice nightlife and artistic vibes. It’s the perfect area to enjoy a perfect mix of culture, fun bars, and quieter corners near the canals to explore during the day.

Where to Stay in Venice?

I recommend booking a night or two in Venice, and I highly recommend the Hidden Gem in Venice Hotel.

It’s honestly a hidden gem, super central located in Venice.

It’s only a few steps away from the Piazza San Marco, and a two minutes walk from the Basilica San Marco.

The location is king here, since you can truly experience the true “Venice” by staying in such a central location and being a short walking distance from everything.

Also, both on Agoda and Booking.com you can see amazing reviews of this hotel, in both websites the hotel got a high score of 9.1-9.3.

Milan:

Brera – considered the most beautiful neighborhood in Milan. This is the artistic quarter in Milan. It’s stylish, historic, and home to the famous Brera Art Gallery. It’s the perfect charming area in Milan, filled with high-end atmosphere.

Navigli – the perfect option for those who want a young, vibrant evening experience. Navigli offers great nightlife, and is known for its happy hour (Aperitivo) scene, fun flea markets, and great trendy bars.

Where to Stay in Milan?

A lovely recommendation for a central hotel in Milan is the Max Brown Hotel Missori!

It’s a 4-star hotel, located in the heart of Milan, only 10-minutes walk away from the Duomo, and beautifully designed rooms.

Amalfi Coast:

Where to stay in Amalfi Coast depends on the type of trip you are interested in, and in where you want to visit.

Amalfi or Maiori – great options for easy ferry access and central location. It’s the perfect base to be in to explore the iconic areas of Amalfi Coast. Both Amalfi and Maiori offers great public transport links for day trips to Ravello or Capri.

Positano – the iconic Positano is a must-visit, though it’s also a classy place to stay at. But you do need to prepare yourself for very expensive prices, and it’s also not convenient for traveling as there are a lot of stairs in Positano.
But in any case, it’s an iconic, romantic, and luxurious destination to stay at when exploring Amalfi Coast.

Salerno – technically it’s just outside of the official boarders of the Amalfi Coast, but it is a perfect budget-friendly option to stay at to explore Amalfi Coast from.
There is an excellent transportation system, accommodation prices are much cheaper, but you will need to rely on ferries or buses for all sightseeing places (if you are not renting a car). Though it’s a great option to consider if you want to save money and still explore Amalfi Coast.

Where to Stay in Amalfi Coast?

Villa Rosa residences hotel in Ravello (a beautiful town in Amalfi Coast) is a lovely 3-stars apartments hotel located near Amalfi, offering BEAUTIFUL ocean and mountain views of the Amalfi Coast, as well as a beautiful outdoor pool.

Each apartment includes a little kitchen, so you can also cook for yourself. It’s pretty central in Amalfi, the Amalfi Cathedral is 1 mile away, and the famous Villa Rufolo is 2.2 miles away.

Boats and ferries are available near the hotel.

Cinque Terre:

Monterosso al Mare – the largest village, that also has the only sandy beach in the area. You can find in Monterosso al Mare beautiful beaches, a great hotel selection, and more.

Vernazza – one of the 5 centuries-old villages that make up the Cinque Terre, it is a beautiful town that looks straight out of a painting. Though it is very crowded during the day, but it is quite during the early morning and evening.

La Spezia – located outside the five villages, and a great budget-friendly option to save money and still explore the beautiful Cinque Terre area.
La Spezia offers much cheaper accommodation and excellent train connections, make it a perfect budget place to stay at for daily train trips into the Cinque Terre.

Where to Stay in Cinque Terre?

If you want to stay in one of the towns that are part of Cinque Terre, here’s a great recommendation of Hotel Gianni Franzi, which is a lovely boutique hotel with breathtaking ocean views!

I recommend booking thr Deluxe Double Room with sea view, to get the full experience.

The village’s main square is only a short walking distance from the hotel.

There are also beautiful panoramic hiking tracks nearby, and there’s also a small sandy beach and the marina are a short walk away.

Reviews are amazing, the hotel got 8.7 out of 10 on Booking.com, and 8.6 on Agoda!

Dolomites:

Dobbiaco – the area of Dobbiaco is a central location to exploring the Northern and Eastern Dolomites lakes. Dobbiaco is a great central town that is only 20 minutes from Lago di Braies, 30 minutes from Lago di Misurina, and the famous Lago di Doobiaco is right in town.
It offers a great starting point and even a base for exploring Southern and Eastern lakes like Lago di Misurina for example.

Cortina d’Ampezzo – a BEAUTIFUL resort town in the Dolomites and is an excellent base if you want to explore the Eastern Dolomites lakes and famous hiking areas. Cortina is surrounded by some of the most dramatic mountain peaks in the Dolomites.
Also, it is the starting point for some of the best high-altitude lake hikes, notably Lago di Sorapis.

Where to Stay in The Dolomites?

Ariston Dolomiti Residence is a lovely aparthotel in Dobbiaco, which is a central area in the Dolomites to explore both Northern and Eastern Dlomoties Lakes.

The hotel is also a great place to stay at in the winter, if you are on a ski trip, the hotel is close to Mont’Elmo ski slopes, and ski storage is free at the hotel.

Btw, all apartments have a balcony, which is a huge bonus in my opinion!

Lake Como

Bellagio – when you are dreaming of staying at Lake Como, you are probably imagining Bellagio, which is a stunning town with great ferry connections to all parts of the lake. It is best for iconic views of Lake Como, central location, and romantic vibes.
Varenna – a smaller, colorful town with romantic vibes and beautiful views. It’s an easily accessible town (it has a train station), and is perfect for a quiet and peaceful stay.
Como – the big city in Southern Lake Como, and offers great shopping, easy to access, and is best for those who want a wider selection of opportunities. There are many great hotels and restaurants, and it’s also fairly close to Milan or even Switzerland.

Where to Stay in Lake Como?

Albergo Del Sole hotel in Varenna is a beautiful hotel, located only 320+ feet away from the shores of the gorgeous Lake Como.

It offers beautiful rooms, with beautiful views, and a restaurant with a pizzeria and a snack bar. Also, there’s a delicious breakfast included.

How Much Does a Trip to Italy Cost?

Your daily budget in Italy really depends on the type of traveler you are. For example, as a budget traveler you can expect a daily cost of 45 € – 85 € for street food/groceries, 1-2 major attractions fees, and public transportation.

As a mid-range traveler you can expect to pay 100 € – 190 € per day for a restaurant, a nice dinner, daily coffee/gelato, 1-2 major attractions fees, public transportation, and an occasional taxi.

And lastly, as a luxury traveler you can expect to pay a daily cost of 220 € on fine dining meals, cocktails, private guides/tours, frequent taxis, and more exclusive experiences.

Here’s a little breakdown of typical costs:

If you won’t, and especially if you are visiting in the summer, you’ll likely be stuck without tickets.

2. Florence:

Walking around Florence feels like walking through an open-air museum.

This beautiful city is charming, offering stunning views from Piazzale Michelangelo and delicious Tuscan cuisine.

Best Places To Visit: Duomo, Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vecchio, Michelangelo’s David.

Popular Day Trips From Florence: Pisa, Siena, San Gimignano, Lucca, Chianti wine region, and even Cinque Terre.

Recommended Trip Length: 2-3 days.

Venice is definitely one of my favorite cities in Italy. It’s truly unlike any other city in the world, and is filled with beautiful canals, palaces, magical bridges, and hidden alleys.

Venice is really magical, photogenic, and an unforgettable destination that takes a special place in your heart.

Don’t miss wandering through quiet neighborhoods like Dorsoduro or Cannaregio, where you’ll find local cafés and artisan shops.

Best Places To Visit: St. Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace, Riatlo Bridge, and take a gondola ride!
But honestly, the best thing thing to do in Venice is just wander the beautiful streets, alleys, and cross the stunning bridges.

Popular Day Trips From Venice: If you are thinking of fund ay trips, you should definitely visit Murano, Burano, Torcello, and even Verona.

Recommended Trip Length: 1-2 days. But with that being said, I spend only one day in Venice, and I truly think you should stay at least one night in the city to really feel and truly explore Venice.

✈ PRO Travel Tip: As of April 2026 to July 2026, Venice has implemented it’s Venice entry fee. It will cost 5 euors per person if you pay up to four days in advance, or 10 euros per person if you pay the day you visit. Though if you are staying at least one night in Venice, you don’t need to pay the access fee.

4. Tuscany

Exploring the countryside of Tuscany is truly a dream.

For those who want breathtaking views, beautiful landscapes, delicious wine, and magical towns – Tuscany is just for you!

The countryside is perfect for road trips, and Tuscany is relaxing, romantic, and one of the best region for slowing down your Italy itinerary.

Best Places To Visit: Explore Chianti vineyards, Siena, Montepulciano, San Gimignano, and Val d’Orcia. Make sure to include wine tastings, wine and cheese tastings, take Tuscan cooking classes, and enjoy scenic drives.

Popular Day Trips From Tuscany: If you want to take a little break from the Tuscany countryside, great day trips are Pisa, home to the famous Leaning Tour of Pisa.
Lucca is also a charming city to visit. It’s only 30 minutes away from Pisa, making these both cities and excellent pair of a single day trip from the Tuscan countryside.

5. Amalfi Coast

Amalfi Coast is the place you imagine in your head when dreaming of a European summer!
This beautiful coast offers cliffside villages, dramatic views, and beautiful beaches.
The best time to visit Amalfi Coast is during the summer months, but you can also enjoy it during the spring and between early-mid September.

Best Places To Visit: Explore Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, Sorrento, and make sure to hop on a ferry to Capri!
The highlights of your trip to Amalfi Coast will definitely be the Path of the Gods hike, great beach clubs, and unforgettable coastal views.

Popular Day Trips From Amalfi Coast: The best day trips from Amalfi Coast are Pompeii, Naples, Mt. Vesuvius, and Ischia.

Recommended Trip Length: 2-5 days. Depends on how many places you want to visit.

I recommend taking ferries instead – they are faster, and offer the best views of cliffside towns.

Best Places To Visit: Explore Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.
The highlights of your stay in Cinque Terre will definitely include beautiful boat rides, cliffside sunsets, famous coastal hiking trails, and delicious, fresh seafood.

Popular Day Trips From Cinque Terre: The best day trips from Cinque Terre are Portofino, Levanto, or La Spezia.

7 Days are the perfect peak into Italy, and are great to experience a little bit from this beautiful country.
Here are three options for a 7 days itinerary:

1. Rome (3 days) → Florence (2 days) → Venice (2 days)
2. Amalfi Coast (4 days) → Rome (3 days)
3. Milan (2 days) → Verona (1 day) → Venice (2 days) → Rome (2 days)

10 Days Italy Itinerary:

10 days are much better for fully experiencing each destination you visit, and not just running around every 2 days.

Here are three options for 10 days Italy itineraries:

2. Rome (3 days) → Tuscany (3 days) → Pisa + Florence (2 days) → Venice (2 days)
